Chapecoense awarded Copa Sudamericana 2016

CONMEBOL has officially awarded Chapecoense with the 2016 Copa Sudamericana. The governing body wrote that it “has decided to declare the Chapecoense Football Association champion of the 2016 edition of the Sudamericana and give Atletico Nacional special recognition with the Centenary CONMEBOL Fair Play Award.” Chapecoense will be awarded $2m in prize money. Atletico Nacional will receive $1m.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing but the evidence suggests that the plane ran out of fuel. Only three Chapecoense players survived the crash. Teams from across the globe gave tribute over the past week. With all Champions League and Europa League games holding a moment of silence before each game.

As champions of the Copa Sudamericana, Chapecoense will get a guaranteed spot in next year’s Copa Libertadores.

Top Brazilian clubs have offered to loan players for free to Chapecoense and have asked the league for the team to be exempt from relegation for three years.
