Iceland – The Smallest Nation to Qualify for World Cup

A 2-0 victory over Kosovo was enough for the small nation of 335,000 people to reach the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. The island nation has just 20,000 registered footballers, one of the smallest playing pools in the world. Iceland has invested a lot of resources into coaching and youth development in recent years, with 1 in 500 having a UEFA-qualification.

They came close to earning a qualifying spot in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, losing their play-off match to Croatia after finishing 2nd in the group.
